Cut list
2026-06-29
- Stock not wide enough for 8” wide deck, need to edge glue two parts: see tutorial
- plan: true stock first, then cut parts to rough size
- true stock: do I need more than 1 face+edge for layout? But easier to true whole board?
- decision: true whole board, but only S3S (two parallel faces, one square edge). Not surface. Parts will still need cleanup (except part abutting clean edge) and surfacing.
- trued one of the two 4/4 boards (it’s about 0.79”)
- #ppp truing stock way easier now with planing stops, sharper plane, better setup technique, wax on plane sole, etc.
2026-07-01
- face i trued apparently moved out of true. Re-planed most of it but not quite done. It’s the face that the face-edge mark points to.
2026-07-06
- both 4/4 boards now S3S. Try to cut deck halves from marked edge (without trim), should be good for edge gluing
- next: cut deck halves, edge glue, then cut other pieces
2026-07-08
- sike! Boards not s3s, parallel face wasn’t parallel. Redoing
- folding workbench surface isn’t completely flat, maybe introducing chatter when planing?
2026-07-11
- bought a second plane iron and put a large camber on it. (Not a proper scrub iron because the flat edge is still flat, bevel is cambered.) Put it in the smoother with a wider frog and chipbreaker set 2mm back. Having a much easier time thickness planing - takes thicker, narrower shavings with less effort.
- Also helped: made Planing stop, wearing shoes instead of slippers duh
- also bought a Jack plane (#5), takes same blades as smoother
- both 4/4 boards S3S, final thickness 23/32
- could use some final smoothing? Or do after gluing panel?
2026-07-13
- cut out deck halves and edge glued. Will want cleanup after glue is set.

2026-07-15
- cut out fence halves and laminated.
- did a very accurate crosscut using ryōba saw, line scribed all the way around, and two knife walls.
- struggled with accurate rip cuts (fortunately the fence is going to have an angle cut out of the side anyway)

2026-07-17
- face planed both faces of the deck, they are Pretty Flat™ and probably parallel.
- next: clean up and square deck edges, clean up deck ends, clean up fence

2026-08-15
- did a little cleanup on deck ends but it’s hard without a tail vice. Using bench hook as shooting board helped a bit.
- cut fence diagonal and cleaned up the cut.
- did diagonal cut with dozuki with piece held horizontally - was very hard.
- held vertically would have been easier but portable vice not stable enough. Also vice was clamping the two pieces together and trapping the saw
- maybe should have used rip saw, it’s “almost” along the grain
- planed up beautifully anyway

2026-08-16
- marked dado layout on deck
- cut knife walls
- cut first dado wall with dozuki
- difficulty holding to the line despite knife wall, cut walked

2026-08-17
- cut second dado wall, cut dado with chisel and router plane
- dado channel is a bit rough but smooth enough for fence to slide in nicely
- dado walls are flared out from saw drift. Fence holds well under light pressure but pops out with any force, e.g. probably when planing a work piece. Fence also 0.5° off square which will be transferred to the work piece when shooting
- next: try to square up dado walls with chisel

2026-08-20
- squared up and straightened dado walls.
- fence now 0.22° off square, hopefully good enough.
- with a hammer tap to secure, it’s pretty firm, resists pressure
- next: trim fence almost flush, chamfer underside of deck, prep stock for foot and runner
2026-08-24
- lightly surfaced stock
- cut out foot, runner and cleat
- dry fit!
- next: true and surface parts, assemble
- foot and runner aren’t quite the same thickness, fix for better stability

2026-08-25
- surfaced foot and runner, trued up cleat a bit.
- made makeshift shooting board with clamps and scrap, see below
- cleat hard to true, too small!
- attached runner to deck with glue and screws

2026-08-26
- attached foot and cleat
- one cleat screw didn’t go in properly, abandoned it
- glue squeeze out made some bumps in the runner surface so plane would deflect or judder. Pared them off with chisel but made some divots in the process. Small so should still allow smooth plane movement, but ugly 😢
- last thing to do: shoot end of fence to make it flush
2026-08-28
- done!#ppp
- successfully planed end grain of fence (after re-sharpening smooth plane blade, seemed to blunt quickly)
- learning: jack plane sole is not square, smoothing plane is pretty square though
