Working definition:
Observability is understanding what a system is doing enough to solve problems in that system.
This illustrates:
- How you can have more or less of it
- Difference from (and overlap with) monitoring
- How it’s relevant to more things than outages (perf, cost, new features)
It can even be the perception that you understand - your mental model doesn’t have to be correct to be useful.
