- Had a catch-22 - needed to true stock to make bench hook but couldn’t plane without a planing stop or bench hook.
- Spent a while trying to plane face grain without a stop, taking ages. Decided to give up and make it with cupped boards
- Decided to both glue up and screw - I thought the screws would help with precision due to the pilot holes. Learned about screw width and length. Probably didn’t actually need the screws.
- Too much glue - board moved around while clamped, hard to seat precisely
- Screw split the pine.
- first time:
- Knife wall
- Screw fastening
- Despite hiccups the bench hook is completed and works pretty well!
- Both joints seem strong under planing force despite dodgy glue-up and splitting.
- Base is pretty flat with fences pulling it
- Glue squeeze out makes it not sit completely flush, do better at cleanup
- Screws are unfortunate for planing since risk of plane slipping into a screw head and wrecking the blade (so far avoidable with positioning, but sole bumped the screws several times)
